Per data from Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have died during detention since October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has stated that the real figure is probably significantly higher, as a result of hundreds of missing people from Gaza.

Updated Statistics

Official armed forces finalized information on deaths in detention for May 2024, and correctional authorities by September 2024. Investigators documented a further 35 casualties in confinement subsequent to these timeframes and verified them with Israeli authorities.

Although the overall count of casualties charted being substantially larger than earlier projections, it likely does not reflect the entire scope of Palestinian loss, as stated by the director of the prisoners and detainees department.

“While we are providing evidence for a greater figure of deaths than previously reported, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are sure that there are still individuals who died in confinement that we have not identified.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified government records shows that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who died in jail were ordinary citizens, based on a related inquiry.

By May of this year, a defense forces registry following all combatants in Gaza, a roster of more than 47,000 named individuals, listed only 21 fatalities in custody. By that date, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had died in detention.

Detention Conditions

Assault, abuse, and additional maltreatment of Palestinians has become routine across Israel’s jail system throughout the duration of conflict. High-ranking authorities have openly admitted starvation rations and an below-ground detention center confining detainees who never see daylight.

Current and former detainees and insiders from the Israeli military have all alleged routine infractions of global standards.

Organized Maltreatment

The systematic abuse was accompanied by a troubling surge in fatalities recorded across at least 12 prison sites in Israel. During the previous decade preceding the war, there were usually several deaths a year.

“This does not represent merely an isolated incident sporadically. It is systemic and it is expected to endure,” a representative commented, in part due to the fact there is a climate of near total impunity for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinian individuals.

Merely one incident of beating detainees has come to trial, with the soldier sentenced to 210 days. “In spite of this large quantity of deaths, during 24 months not one individual has faced arrest,” the representative said. “There have been no prosecutions over any fatality.

“While these practices remain in effect, every Palestinian in confinement is in danger, even the those in good health, even the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

High-Profile Cases

Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, including a 50-year-old healthcare leader who perished in confinement after four months in detention.

A detainee held with the victim reported that he was led to the exercise area by correctional officers immediately preceding his passing, obviously hurt and exposed from the waist down. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Detention administrators and military provided investigators with the number of deaths in custody, and minimal additional information such as the location where they perished, but not the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, mostly detainees from Gaza, researchers could not to correlate the few details supplied by officials to a casualty documented by rights organisations, either through statements from freed prisoners or coverage in the press.

The detainees’ families might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinians it is detaining. During 210 days at the beginning of the hostilities, the armed services declined to give essential data about the whereabouts of many of people confined in Gaza, in effect implementing a policy of unacknowledged detention, according to the advocacy organization.
