Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
